| BROWNIE |
| Name: Brownie Sex: Neutered male Breed: Chow mix Coloring: Brown Weight: approximately 50 pounds] Age: Young adult In August 2009 Moore Humane Society (MHS) was contacted by a woman who aids and rescues animals in the West Southern Pines area. She had learned of a dog (a young, unaltered Chow mix with no name) that was severely injured and in a pen that was nailed shut. The owner told the woman that Brownie’s injuries were due to a dog fight. We asked the woman if she could convince the owner to allow her to bring the dog to our shelter for examination. When Brownie came to MHS, his head and ears were so matted with blood that he had to be shaved in order to examine his wounds. In addition to multiple lacerations that had become infected, Brownie also had chemical burns to his head and face. We gave Brownie some pain medicine and antibiotics and began treating his wounds. Although Brownie must have been in a good deal of pain, he remained calm and gentle and seemed to know we were trying to help. Because Brownie’s injuries couldn’t have been caused by another dog, we didn’t want to treat him only to have him returned to the same inhumane conditions where he had been living. So after some persuasion, the owner agreed to surrender the dog to us. We named the dog Brownie and he was neutered, vaccinated, de- wormed and heartworm tested. To our dismay, Brownie tested positive for heartworm. We provided for his treatment, and today both the heartworm and his physical wounds are gone. We can never know all this sweet dog has suffered, but you can help ensure that Brownie’s future is filled with love and kindness. Despite his background Brownie loves people, and he would thrive as the only pet in your home. |
