Moore Humane Society (MHS) received a call on a Saturday evening that some cats were being kept in deplorable conditions near Cameron in Moore County near Cameron in Moore County. The caller was able to give exact directions to the site. MHS Board Member Corky O’ Connor arranged to meet with a Deputy Sheriff that evening and assess the situation.
What they found was a horrible site: the cats were being kept in a wire chicken coop with little or no shelter from the elements. To escape the mud, rain water and layers of feces, the cats were huddled on top of a dresser and in their food pan. The only water bowl was full of urine and feces and it was undetermined how long they had gone without water. There were 22 cats in all, one female cat was declawed on all four paws and one kitten was found dead in a drawer in the dresser.
Moore County Animal Control was called along with Animal Advocates of Moore County (AAMC) and on Sunday morning, Corky O’Connor and Jeanne Orlando of Moore Humane Society and Barb Shepherd of AAMC arrived Sunday morning to remove the cats, along with an animal control officer.
The cats were brought to MHS and examined by Dr. Wolford and treated. Many of the cats has sores on their feet due to urine burns and others had conjunctivitis due to urine fumes. They also had ear mites so badly their ears were bleeding. One cat had a rotting hole in her leg.
Once all the cats were examined and treated, AAMC took ten cats and we kept eleven. All the cats have been bathed and groomed and several have already been sterilized.
