| Moore Humane Society received a call from a man in Carthage who had found but was afraid to approach her. We drove out to his home and found Maddie lying against a generator, very pregnant and near death. She had gone days, possibly longer, without food or water before MHS came to her rescue. She was so weak, she couldn’t stand or even and hopelessness. Tears flooded down her dirty, pain ridden face. Never have we seen a dog cry until that day! We quickly rushed her to the nearest vet clinic. While lying on the exam table, they began to flush out the dirt and mud that was caked inside of Maddie’s dry mouth. Another vet tech noticed that what they initially thought were fleas, were actually ants swarming all over her body! Maddie spent several days at Carthage Animal Hospital receiving medical care. When we brought Maddie to our shelter we tested her for heartworms. To our dismay, she was positive. A week after coming to the shelter, Maddie gave birth to nine puppies. Only six of the puppies survived. When six orphaned kittens were brought to our shelter, Maddie eagerly accepted them to her brood until another foster mother could be found. Maddie’s physical condition suggests that she has been bred almost literally to death, but she has a heart of gold and appreciates every kindness shown to her no matter how slight. In her eyes you can see the gentle spirit and wisdom of an older soul, but her Beagle bark will warm your heart and make you smile. After Maddie’s puppies are weaned, she will start her heartworm treatment. Once recovered, Maddie’s search for a home with the loving family she has always longed for will begin. Maddie will be ready to go to a new home hopefully by mid to late August. If you think you and Maddie might be a match made in heaven, go ahead and fill out an adoption application. Applications will be accepted until her puppies have been weaned and her heartworm treatment is completed. UPDATE!! Maddie has been adopted! |
